Abstract

Basq was born as the result of an illusion, the objective was to unite the passion for surfing, fashion and respect for the environment. It started with the idea of creating the most sustainable shoes that are committed to the planet and the oceans. After more than two years of work and research, they managed to transform some of the waste that pollutes the oceans the most, such as plastics and tires, into 100% recycled sneakers.

The brand and the product have expanded and they have incorporated different garments, staying true to the spirit of sustainable design and 100% recycled.

Challenges and recommendations

Perseverance and step by step:

Aitor Alvarez, the founder fo Basq Company, had been with his business idea in mind since 2017, but it was not until 2019 when he was able to materialize it due to the long period of time it took him to achieve what for him was a basic condition to be able to start: finding manufacturers and suppliers that shared care for the environment.

Once this first objective was exceeded, Aitor and his team went for the second: to manufacture the first 100% recycled shoes on the market. After the success of their sneakers, they were encouraged by the creation of t-shirts and sweatshirts, made up of 40% recycled plastic bottles and 60% recycled organic cotton.
