Abstract

This is a family business started in 1989 by business owners aunt who was uses surplus fruit to make Jam. It is Artisan and has won multiple awards for jams, marmalades, savoury preserves and speciality preserves. Products are handmade in small batches using the traditional open pot boiling method. The best quality ingredients are sourced mainly locally & all preserves are 100% natural. They are focused on supply chain and have solid relationships with buyers noted on their website - We really value our local growers like Malcolm Robertson (rhubarb and beetroot), Des Jeffares (blackcurrants), Christian von Englebrechton (apples), Eamon Crean (strawberries) and Pat Clarke (raspberries). We can’t get citrus fruit here in Ireland though. We do the next best thing, we get all of our lemons, oranges, grapefruit, clementines and limes from two family run organic fruit farms in Seville and Il Biviere in Sicily.

Relevance

Finances & Management. Wexford Home Preserves signed up for the national food and drink sustainability programme Origin Green in 2018 to begin their sustainability journey. They worked with their suppliers to gain certification and targeted changes in packaging and targeted energy reduction to become more sustainable and have a more sustainable business model. They have a stronger business financially by looking to their supply chain and cost centres for sustainability.

Concepts addressed within ESG

Talk to suppliers and develop strong relationship with them to make sure your supply chain is robust. You are sourcing as sustainably as possible. Look at all parts of your product including packaging and see if you can cut emissions by using more sustainable parts of your packaging this too can impact your bottom line.

The cost of powering the product was also investigated and measured. And they were able to reduce their use and save money in the process.

Impact & Achieved Results

Within the packaging target area, the company has reduced total kg of packaging per kg of product produced by 12% since the inception of its plan in 2021, already two percentage points ahead of the original target set from its 2020 baseline. In doing so they have made savings to their bottom line and ensure they are sustainable not only in the green sense but also in the financial environment. They have made saving that cannot be disclosed here.
