Abstract

This association is motivated by the recovery of Olive trees. It is a social project to fight against depopulation and sponsor an abandoned olive tree. Aportation gives the right to name the olive tree and visit it, for a new rural tourism experience. It is a social project, collaborating with ATADI, an group of people with mental disabilities, that are involved in the labour of recovery of the trees. Olive oil is produces and given to people that decide to sponsor the project. (2L per year for a 60€ subscription). This project is now developing a new educative line: Programa educa: an educational line for the youngest to obtain a sustainable rural awareness in environmental matters, sustainable food and social action.

Relevance

The rural exodus has motivated hundreds of people to abandon their olive groves due to the great work involved in maintaining them. This exodus is particularly important for the youngest, due to the lack of projects that fix the populations. This project was thus motivated by the mission of addressing a demographic issue in rural territories. The project creates opportunities in a rural area that is increasingly abandoned. Through a 4 "S" initiative - Sustainable, Social, Solidarity and Healthy (Salud in Spanish) - the collaborators and producers return to work for quality olive oil.

Concepts addressed within ESG
  • Social inclusion with ATADI.
  • Conservation of Biodiversity.
  • It helps to protect the environment.
  • It support young entrepreneurs in rural areas.

Education to create sustainable rural awareness.

Impact & Achieved Results

This initiative has already saved 15,000 olive trees in the Teruel region and is bringing new producers to abandoned plantations, generating jobs both for the maintenance of the centuries-old trees and for the harvest and production of olive oil. So far, 16 new jobs have been created, among which there are members of ATADI (Associations of Persons with Intellectual Disabilities) who are trained to help maintain the olive groves and harvest their fruit. Nowadays, participants from 15 countries, in addition to Spain, collaborate with donations and are even invited to visit their "relatives", also promoting tourism in the region.

In 2017, the brand “Mi Olivo” is launched, and new rural areas are involved.
