Abstract

OBIOLS is a family business started in 1952 by Jaume Obiols. They nowadays have 3 saling points in Lleida, Tarragona and Puerto de Vilanova. They supply with national and international productions of wood from 100% sustainable forests. Also, they offer a wide variety of prefabricated products: boards, chipboard, melamine, OSB, parquet, doors, etc. The company has state-of-the-art machinery specialized in cutting, edging or cladding and machining, both wood and boards.

Relevance

Maderas Obiols perceives wood as an essential and essential material in our environment. Certified wood contributes to sustainability in the broadest sense of the word. Forest development and commitment to the environment are one of their main priorities. They have products of sustainable origin and are certified by the two largest forest management control systems and chain of responsibility: PEFCTM (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council). They also supply agglomerate that presents low formaldehyde emissions, in accordance with the rules of the official California Air Resource Board (CARB). They also promote wood construction as a sustainable, efficient element with less environmental impact, but always certified wood from forests managed for such use; a way of contributing to sustainability in the broadest sense of the word.

Certifications

Obiols Woods are certified by the two largest certification systems for forest management and the chain of responsibility: PEFCTM (Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification schemes) and FSC® (Forest Stewardship Council).

Challenges and recommendations

The path towards the PEFC certification was not easy and they had to change and adapt many processes and methodologies, but they managed to be one of the pioneer companies in their territory to obtain PEFC certification, all thanks to Jaume Obiols' commitment and love for forests.
